Sorrow (Van Gogh, 1882) Poster

"Sorrow" was considered by Vincent as one amongst his strongest figure drawings. He mentioned it in quite a few of his letters, including a letter from July 1882 where he says, "I want to make drawings that touch some people. Sorrow is a small beginning [...] there is at least something directly from my own heart." **

Its model, Sien Hoornik, lived a hard life and died by suicide in 1904, which sharpens the work’s quiet ache.
